ADHD Treatment for Adults

ADHD Treatment

for Adults

Practical, compassionate support to help you heal shame, build skills, and thrive with ADHD

Living with ADHD as an adult can feel like a constant uphill climb: the overwhelm, the shame, the self-criticism, the pile of unfinished tasks. But ADHD is not a moral failure, it’s a neurodevelopmental difference.

And with the right support, you can not only feel more regulated, connected, and capable—you can tap into your ADHD superpowers and build a life where you can truly thrive.

At Northfield Dynamic Therapy, we offer a compassionate, practical approach to ADHD treatment for adults: healing shame and trauma, building emotional regulation, and creating structure so you can actually get things done, and feel good doing it! You deserve more than just getting by, you deserve to thrive.

How is ADHD Treated?

ADHD is best treated through a combination of medication, coaching, therapy, and lifestyle tools tailored to your unique needs.

If you’re wondering how to actually treat your ADHD, you’re not alone. The good news is: ADHD treatment works, and it’s never too late to start. While there’s no single “cure,” research shows that a combination of approaches can make a big difference.

And honestly? You probably wouldn’t even want to cure your ADHD entirely. Because as challenging as it can be, ADHD is also part of what makes you creative, resilient, passionate, and uniquely you. The goal of treatment isn’t to erase your ADHD, it’s to help you harness your strengths and build systems that make life a little easier (and a lot more joyful).

“ADHD treatment isn’t about curing you—it’s about helping you thrive as you.”

Here are the most effective, evidence-based ways to treat ADHD:

Medication

Medication is often the first-line treatment for ADHD, and for good reason: it works. About 70–80% of children and adults with ADHD experience significant symptom improvement with the right medication. Stimulants (like Adderall or Vyvanse) and non-stimulants (like Strattera or Guanfacine) help regulate focus, energy, and impulsivity.

If you’ve never tried ADHD medication, a medication trial is highly recommended to see what it can offer you. One of the advantages of ADHD medications is how quickly their effects can be observed (often within an hour of the first dose). This is quite different than most antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications, which can take 4–6 weeks to begin to see the effects. This means you can usually determine within a few days whether a stimulant medication is effective and what dosage works best for you.

But medication alone doesn’t build new skills or heal the shame and emotional strain many ADHDers carry, and that’s where coaching, therapy, and lifestyle tools come in.

Coaching

An ADHD coach helps you understand your unique strengths and challenges, set goals, stay accountable, and develop systems that help you (and your brain) thrive. Coaching focuses on practical strategies for time management, task initiation and completion, relational engagement, and emotional regulation.

One powerful tool often used by coaches and therapists is called ADHD body doubling. Body doubling is the practice of doing potentially frustrating or boring tasks in the presence of someone else, your “body double.” Whether in person or over video, the calm, focused presence of another person helps anchor you to the task at hand, making it easier to get started and stay on track.

At Northfield Dynamic Therapy, Nate offers two weekly body-doubling sessions called Task Initiation Playtime with Nate. These sessions are designed to help you (1) carve out a designated time and supportive setting to tackle tasks that might otherwise feel impossible to start (laundry, dishes, emails, writing reports, etc.) and (2) learn how to activate your motivation system in daily life to make task initiation and completion easier. You can read more about Nate’s Task Initiation Playtime below on this page.

Therapy

Therapy for ADHD addresses the emotional side of the condition: healing shame, processing trauma, and practicing emotional regulation. A therapist can help you strengthen relationships, build confidence, and stop beating yourself up for the ways your brain works differently. At Northfield Dynamic Therapy, we focus on creating a safe, validating space where you can untangle the emotional impact of ADHD and practice new ways of relating (to yourself and others) in real time.

Lifestyle Tools & Education

Knowledge is power. Learning how your ADHD brain works helps you build routines and systems that actually fit your life. Many adults with ADHD find success with planners, alarms, visual reminders, body-doubling, mindfulness, exercise, and sleep hygiene strategies. We’ll help you experiment with these tools and tailor them to your strengths, so they feel less like rigid rules and more like supports you actually want to use.

What Is Task Initiation Playtime?

This is not an accountability group. Instead, it’s a body-doubling space where we come together to practice turning on our motivation systems in real time. Each week, you’ll bring a task that’s been weighing on you — something as small as opening the mail or as big as finally finishing that work project — and we’ll practice the art of getting started without shame or judgment.

The name “Playtime” is intentional. Many ADHDers have interest-based nervous systems that make task initiation difficult. Sometimes it takes as much energy to start a task as it does to do the task itself. That’s exhausting! By approaching this practice as play, we reduce pressure, spark curiosity, and create space to actually enjoy getting things done, especially in connection with others.

How It Works

  • Everyone joins the Zoom room and shares the task they’re planning to tackle.

  • Mics go on mute, and we all quietly work alongside each other for 50–55 minutes.

  • At the end, we check in and celebrate progress.

These sessions are great for: laundry, dishes, emails, That One Big Thing you’ve been putting off, and more.

Why Body-Doubling Works

Body-doubling is a powerful, ADHD-friendly strategy that helps anchor you to the present moment and gently activates your motivation system. The presence of others provides co-regulation, structure, and accountability-without-pressure. Over time, you’ll get better at understanding how your own motivation system works, troubleshooting when things don’t go smoothly, and practicing strategies you can carry into daily life.

Investment

  • $100 per month for one of the weekly session blocks (Tuesdays OR Thursdays). That's 4+ hours each month of body-doubling work!

  • $150 per month if you’d like to join BOTH session blocks Tuesday and Thursday sessions. that's 8+ hours each month of body-doubling work!

Payments are billed monthly through Ivy Pay, a HIPAA-compliant and user-friendly system that accepts credit, debit, and HSA cards.

Can I do the Monday Therapy Group plus the Task-Initiation Playtime session?

Absolutley! When you combine the Adult ADHD Therapy Group with one or both of the Task Initiation Playtime sessions, you can receive up to 14 hours of high-quality ADHD-focused support each month for less than half the cost of individual therapy. By choosing these services together, you’re investing in a holistic, practical, and relationship-focused approach to ADHD treatment, and giving yourself more opportunities for support, healing, and momentum.
